Valentine’s Day 2013
The next to last run before marathon weekend. I was planning to run the three miles on Wednesday night but felt a little queasy after dinner out and ended up falling asleep in my running clothes. I awoke at 3:30 am and decided to go ahead with the run because I knew I wouldn’t get back up if I fell back to sleep.
It was pretty cold outside – 36 degrees. So I put on my black running pants…and my black skull cap….and my black running jacket. Get the picture?
I’m out the door at 4:00 and ready to get this run over with! The pain in the legs started after one half mile and my frustration rose. That’s when everything got interesting. Over the horizon I heard the whirring of helicopters flying over the neighborhood. My tired, edgy mind went into overdrive. I imagined the helicopters were scouring the area looking for an escaped convict who was now probably going to come out of the shadows and hold me hostage. They were probably looking for the fugitive that stabbed the policeman earlier in the week and had yet to be found. Well crap….now I’m a mile and a half from home so I might as well keep going since it’s almost time to turn around…and the choppers are flying away.
Nope….the copters are coming back…and now it hits me. Maybe someone has called in a report of a man all in black running in and out of the shadows of the neighborhood at 4am. Maybe they are looking for me!! Double crap….and I have no ID…just my death bracelet that has my address and wife’s telephone number. What should I do if they come for me? I guess I’ll just lay on the street and point to my death bracelet…..but my imaginary SWAT team of government ninjas is flying away…for good this time…..
Two and a half miles now complete and I’m heading home. The skies are empty except for a few stars here and there. All is quiet. HOW BORING!! Unbelieveable….that is what my crazy brain told me….HOW BORING!! I can’t even imagine what will be going through mind for 26 miles this weekend!
I hope you all had a great Valentine’s Day! This will be my last post until after the Austin Marathon. Keep me in your thoughts…you are in mine. I am pleased to add six new names to the tribute book and each will have a purple ribbon added to my running gear this weekend in their honor:
- Helen Kaylor
- James Bullock
- Hazel Hord
- Rene Bullock
- Georgia Smith
- Joyce McCallum
Make it a memorable day!
